History

Today's romantic canopy beds evoke an era of chivalry and royal luxury, a time when the beauty of one's bed reflected one's wealth and worldly position. This primacy of the bed among household furnishings carried through to the 17th century, which is known as the century of magnificent beds - most notably in France, where King Louis XIV had over 400 luxurious beds decorated with gold, silver, pearls, and velvet curtains.

The coverings of canopy beds were used to provide both warmth and privacy. But a heightened sense of seclusion and intimacy was also part of their intent, and this remains one of the most appealing qualities about canopy beds today.

Creating a Romantic Canopy Bed

A romantic canopy bed can be as simple as above-the-bed fabric or curtains hung from the ceiling, or as elaborate as a wood four poster bed with a full covering or tester that's decorated with curtains, a canopy, and a valance.

If you already own a canopy bed and are looking to give it a more romantic effect, here are some ways to do it: Experiment with different fabrics, whether solids such as satin or sheers such as lace or tulle. Use the ceiling. The first canopy beds featured curtains or tester canopies hung from the ceiling. Metal rings or curtain rods could help you to create a fresh and romantic ambiance. Try different lighting. A ceiling light fixture may tend to diminish the mystery of a canopy bed. Look for lamps that will provide softer, warmer lighting. Add new layers or fabric colors. Accents such as fringe, cording, or trim might also help to brighten a style gone drab.
